Men have always like arguing. But one country in particular stands out. The propensity of bets, in particular bets on horse racing is rooted in the nature of the English for centuries.

Founded in 1766 by Richard Tattersall, a former groom of the Duke of Kensignton, Tattersalls is the oldest blood-stock auctioneers in the world and the largest in Europe. The first premises of the auctioneers were located south - west to Hyde Park (in the outskirts of London at the time).

Two rooms were reserved for the members of the one of the most privileged high society clubs - the Jockey Club, founded in 1752, which is the club of the best racing horse owners. There the gentlemen gathered to socialize and watch horse races and make stakes on the winner. This is exactly where the bookmaking, which was spread not only in England but worldwide, was given a birth. So the name of Richard Tatesol is perpetuated in England, his name bear horse sites and horse course where the bets are made - Tattersalls Enclosure.

The term "Bookie", arises from the British bookmaker, which translates literally "the compiler of the books." People who accepted the bets wrote them in a book which they kept in their hand all the time. At that time even bets with handicap were accepted. There was chaos in London both on the horse courses and places where the bets were made.

This continued until the appearance of traditional bookmakers. The bookmaker reputation was and is a major instrument for success in this business. Since its establishment, this tradition has been marked by two well-known names, which are Fred Swindle and Willian Davies, known as "the Leviathan".

Bookie Today

Around 1850 Davis began to print "list of opportunities" which spread around London. This gave the opportunity to make bets in assessing the chances of winning not only at the race courses. This was actually the prototype of bookmaking companies.

In 1866 the bookmaking crossed over the ocean and the first bookmaking company was opened in Philadelphia. Later such companies were established all over the world. However, Great Britain even today takes the first place in the world in terms of the number of bookmakers.

The passion of the Englishmen for betting is notorious. If years ago the bookmakers in the USA only accepted bets for professional and college sports, the range of bets in the Great Britain is practically unlimited, bets are accepted for golf, football, tennis and especially horse racing. The stakes for different unexpected events, for example whether it will snow by Christmas or if there is life on Mars are very poplar. Bets are also accepted on winners of election or the winners in one or another TV show.
